In 200 words or less please explain why you are choosing this major/specialty

I have decided that I want to major in biology because I am interested in the many different possibilities. This major allows me to branch out into a variety of other fields. Giving myself a choice on how I want to take on the world. Biology is a subject I have always been into. Furthering my education to learn more about life and living organisms, opening my mind up to the possibilities that contribute to the world around us.

1. What are your educational goals? Specifically list your planned major and minor courses of study. What do you plan to do with your education?

I intend to major in biology, allowing myself to branch into other fields, giving myself time to plan further in my future. As I am still not sure what I intend to do for my minor, I intend on exploring my interest. So far I have thought about minoring in language & culture, anthropology, or in environmental studies. Although I don't have everything planned I aim to continue my education as I grow as a person.

What extracurricular activities or events have you participated in during high school?

I am apart of Future Hispanic Leaders of America (FHLA), Environmental Club and I'm vice-presidents of the Art club. While apart of FHLA I have been to been offered to attend many different events. The most memorable event I have attended was the 2019 Hispanic Youth Symposium.

3. What is the most impactful experience that you have had as a participant in TRIO Upward Bound?

I have learned many things that can help prepare me for college, with the help of Trio.

Other than financial, what is the biggest obstacle you face to completing college? What resources will you utilize to help you overcome this obstacle?

I feel that the biggest obstacles that I will face during my time in college, is time its self. I plan on having a part-time job, to be able to prioritize school. Being that I have a sibling who just started college I know his struggle with time management. I would have to make a schedule allowing me to have time for work, studying, homework, getting help with classes or even mandatory events that are outside of class. In order to keep that schedule, I will work hard to keep my self organized and plan things in advance as to not fall behind in any of my classes. With the support of my friends and family, I have no doubt that I can follow and keep my mind organized.

5. What will it mean to you to be the recipient of The Opportunity Fund?

If I were to be the recipient of The Opportunity Fund, I would be happy to have had help. It would lessen the stress of having to come up with the expenses. This opportunity would not only further my education, but it would help give me a chance to be successful in the life I plan to create.

6. To what organizations or events have you offered service during high school? What was the most rewarding volunteer experience that you have had, and why?

The most rewarding volunteer experience that I have had, would be the time I have spent helping people in nursing homes. It did not only make the residents happy, but it was also me who enjoyed their company. Many of the residents I had the chance to interact with, were very funny and seemed to always tell me what a difference I had made by just being there. I looked forward to going to the nursing home after school to help the residents. We did many activities and although I was not the best at them all, I had learned many things from them and I think I have become a better person, learning from their perspective of life.

7. How do you plan to fund your post-secondary education? If you have worked during high school describe what you have done.

I plan to work and apply for more federal assistance to be able to fund my post-secondary education. I currently work after school on certain days still allowing me to attend the clubs I am apart of. Although I don't get to put in many hours because I go straight to work after school, with little time before we close. I mainly get the most out of my job hours during breaks from school. A downside to having a job during high school and still participating in extracurricular activities is having a tight schedule. Working at my job has taught me how to get the hang of things quickly because I do many tasks for everyone, and although it is small simple tasks it helps the department flow overall.
