Broyles Scholarship

Helen Virginia Broyles and Harold Clayton Broyles were born on January 4th,1920 in Caldwell, Idaho. Helen and Harold were the first set of twins ever delivered in Steensland Hospital in Caldwell. Helen & Harold lived in Wilder, then moved to Illinois as children, and were raised on their grandparent’s farm in southern Illinois. On the 20th of June, 1934 Harold was injured by a motor vehicle that stuck him as the two of them were walking along the roadway. Harold was paralyzed from the waist down from the injury. He ultimately died a year later on June 21st, 1935 from those injuries. The 1930’s was the heart of the depression and Helen was unable to graduate from high school in 1938 as she moved to California to find work. There she met her husband, Alvin A. Andres, a native San Franciscan and were married in 1939 in San Mateo, California. She ultimately graduated from High School in 1958 at Benjamin Franklin Adult School in San Francisco, CA, and then went on to become a Licensed Vocational Nurse, and worked at University of California at San Francisco in the surgical department. Helen and Alvin lived in the City of San Francisco on Twin Peaks, overlooking the Bay until 1968. Gay moved to Orland, California to care for her father, Samuel D. Broyles. Samuel’s grandfather served in the Revolutionary War. Alvin “Al” Andres died in May of 1977 at age of 59 years of cancer. Gay, as she was affectionately known, continued to live on her own, doing all of her own yard work until she was 86. Helen “Gay” Andres died in July 2008 at age 88 from cancer. As one of Gay’s dying wishes this scholarship [in memory of her brother and her] was created as she had directed on March 9th, 2008 her children, Norma L. Andres, and Allan A. Andres to do. Gay wanted to help educate the children of the city where she was born, and which she loved. She wanted to help those going on to further their education, as she was not able to do that.
