With my major, I plan to pursue a career in Occupational Therapy, similar health science fields, or various occupations that work with mental health. I have always enjoyed helping people, and I am very fascinated by the study of the mind and behavior. I especially enjoy working with youth. I was on the planning committee for the conference, and I had attended the 6th annual conference as a guest. My role on the committee was Recruitment and Registration Co-Chair. At the conference, I had the opportunity to eat lunch with our keynote speaker. We had a conversation about her ‘I made it’ moment. At that moment, I heard the song “Matilda” by Harry Styles, a song that I resonate with deeply. I looked around the room and took it all in. “I made it!” I thought to myself. |
| Other than financial, what is the biggest obstacle you face to completing college? What resources will you utilize to help you overcome this obstacle? | The biggest obstacle I face to completing college is being First-Generation. It won’t be easy for me to accomplish something that no one else in my family has accomplished. Most people pursuing higher education have family members who have gone to college to help them; however, I do not. |
| 5. What will it mean to you to be the recipient of The Opportunity Fund? | To be the recipient of The Opportunity Fund would show me that, of all the students in the program, I am the most deserving of this scholarship. This wouldn’t mean that I am better than any other student in the program, because I am not. The TRIO Upward Bound class is full of extraordinary students who are all extremely deserving of The Opportunity Fund. Each student brings a unique and necessary trait to the class that showcases what TRIO Upward Bound stands for: courage, honesty, hope, and support. It would mean a lot to me to be the recipient of The Opportunity Fund. |

As a Junior Coach, I work with 3rd to 5th-graders and help them build confidence in themselves. The purpose of GOTR is not only to increase the participants’ physical skills, but also their mental ones. Throughout the seasons, we offer lessons focused on positivity, finding our inner strength, and supporting each other. Having the opportunity to be someone for the participants that I wish I had when I was younger is highly rewarding for me. |
| 7. How do you plan to fund your post-secondary education? If you have worked during high school describe what you have done. | I plan to fund my post-secondary education primarily through scholarships. I come from a low-income family and have never worked during high school. This year, I am serving as ASB Co-President, which makes Student Council my top priority. I am also involved in other organizations, such as Caldwell High School’s National Honor Society and Girls on the Run. I have chosen to prioritize school and clubs I’ve been involved in throughout my high school experience. Due to this, I am unable to fund my post-secondary education on my own. Therefore, I am highly dependent on scholarships for funding my post-secondary education. |
