What is your inteded major/speciality?Psychology
In 200 words or less please explain why you are choosing this major/specialty

I am choosing psychology as my major because I feel passionate about learning how the mind functions. With my major, I plan to pursue a career in Occupational Therapy, similar health science fields, or various occupations that work with mental health. I have always enjoyed helping people, and I am very fascinated by the study of the mind and behavior. I especially enjoy working with youth. Therefore, whichever career path I ultimately choose, I will likely be working primarily with youth.
I have extensive experience working with youth. I have served as a Girls on the Run Junior Coach for five seasons, I have had two internships that provided me with the opportunity to work with children, I helped host three College Carnivals for elementary students, and I am an Academic Tutor at Heritage Charter School. These experiences have helped me learn more about the minds of children and have expanded my passion for psychology.

1. What are your educational goals? Specifically list your planned major and minor courses of study. What do you plan to do with your education?

I plan on attending Northwest Nazarene University to major in Psychology. After I receive my bachelor’s in Psychology, I plan to go to school to get my master’s degree in Occupational Therapy to pursue a career in Occupational Therapy and specialize in pediatrics or mental health.

3. What is the most impactful experience that you have had as a participant in TRIO Upward Bound?

The most impactful experience that I have had as a participant in TRIO Upward Bound was the 7th Annual Young Women in Leadership Conference. I was on the planning committee for the conference, and I had attended the 6th annual conference as a guest. My role on the committee was Recruitment and Registration Co-Chair. At the conference, I had the opportunity to eat lunch with our keynote speaker. We had a conversation about her ‘I made it’ moment. At that moment, I heard the song “Matilda” by Harry Styles, a song that I resonate with deeply. I looked around the room and took it all in. “I made it!” I thought to myself.
The 6th and 7th Annual Young Women in Leadership Conferences have given me confidence, reminded me of my worth, and shown me that my voice and story are important. TRIO has given me many opportunities that I would have never taken if I hadn’t joined the program. The program has shown me that I am capable and worthy of doing great things and being in rooms full of great people.

Other than financial, what is the biggest obstacle you face to completing college? What resources will you utilize to help you overcome this obstacle?

The biggest obstacle I face to completing college is being First-Generation. It won’t be easy for me to accomplish something that no one else in my family has accomplished. Most people pursuing higher education have family members who have gone to college to help them; however, I do not.
I know that I might get discouraged at times, but I will use my resources, such as talking with my admissions counselor or other First-Generation students, to help me overcome this obstacle. Simply applying for colleges and scholarships has not been easy; however, with the help of TRIO and my peers, I have been able to do this. Therefore, finding a similar support system in college will be highly beneficial in helping me overcome the challenge of being a First-Generation college student.

5. What will it mean to you to be the recipient of The Opportunity Fund?

To be the recipient of The Opportunity Fund would show me that, of all the students in the program, I am the most deserving of this scholarship. This wouldn’t mean that I am better than any other student in the program, because I am not. The TRIO Upward Bound class is full of extraordinary students who are all extremely deserving of The Opportunity Fund. Each student brings a unique and necessary trait to the class that showcases what TRIO Upward Bound stands for: courage, honesty, hope, and support. It would mean a lot to me to be the recipient of The Opportunity Fund.

The most rewarding volunteer experience I’ve had is being a Junior Coach for Girls on the Run. As a Junior Coach, I work with 3rd to 5th-graders and help them build confidence in themselves. The purpose of GOTR is not only to increase the participants’ physical skills, but also their mental ones. Throughout the seasons, we offer lessons focused on positivity, finding our inner strength, and supporting each other. Having the opportunity to be someone for the participants that I wish I had when I was younger is highly rewarding for me.

7. How do you plan to fund your post-secondary education? If you have worked during high school describe what you have done.

I plan to fund my post-secondary education primarily through scholarships. I come from a low-income family and have never worked during high school. This year, I am serving as ASB Co-President, which makes Student Council my top priority. I am also involved in other organizations, such as Caldwell High School’s National Honor Society and Girls on the Run. I have chosen to prioritize school and clubs I’ve been involved in throughout my high school experience. Due to this, I am unable to fund my post-secondary education on my own. Therefore, I am highly dependent on scholarships for funding my post-secondary education.
