What is your inteded major/speciality?Biology
In 200 words or less please explain why you are choosing this major/specialty

I am choosing this major because, I wish to get a degree that can get me a job in a research lab and such. I have always been fascinated about the sciences behind life and how I could help contribute to the development of such research. I hope to go into dental school once i get my bachelors in Biology!

1. What are your educational goals? Specifically list your planned major and minor courses of study. What do you plan to do with your education?

My educational goals are to get my bachelor's degree in biology to hopefully get my prerequisites for dental school
if I decide to continue down that path and maybe go for my master's after. I plan to continue studying music by
joining local orchestras and symphonies. And once I am 18, I would like to get my Spanish translator certificate.

What extracurricular activities or events have you participated in during high school?

I have been involved in quite a few school activities, such as Caldwell High School's very own marching band,
serving as both a drum major and a section leader. The winds concert band is also serving as a section leader, and
the jazz band is playing the flute, which is an unusual instrument in jazz. I have also held involvement in the
school's newspaper "The Roar" as a reporter and as an editor, holding the position of the arts & entertainment
editor, writing stories, and taking illustrators under my wing to make our newspaper pretty. I make the crossword in

3. What is the most impactful experience that you have had as a participant in TRIO Upward Bound?

As a participant in TRIO Upward Bound, my most impactful experience was with the old advisor Rhonda, who motivated me to keep studying as my decision of what I wanted to study was. I knew I wanted to go to college, but I was never quite sure on what exactly I wanted to do. For some time I was thinking of going to mortuary school but decided that was not for me. Instead she helped me take a 360 on what I wanted to do, which was funny enough sort of the opposite; turns out it was biology, as it has many choices on what I can do after I graduate. Without her, I don't think I would have chosen this path!

Other than financial, what is the biggest obstacle you face to completing college? What resources will you utilize to help you overcome this obstacle?

My biggest obstacle would be my mental health. For years I have struggled mentally, as I do have generalized anxiety disorder, which has caused me to procrastinate and doubt what I can do. But what I hope to use to overcome this obstacle would be to honestly just go into therapy and continue to use the coping skills I've learned and overall just push through because what I have learned through the years of dealing with this mental illness is sometimes you just have to push through; nobody's coming to save you. You just have to be motivated enough to push through what you feel and succeed.

5. What will it mean to you to be the recipient of The Opportunity Fund?

To be the recipient of the opportunity fund would mean a lot, as I do come from a lower-income household, and I know without scholarships I won't be able to go to college. If I do receive this scholarship, it would take some weight off my shoulders, as I would not have to work as hard to be able to go to college. As a first generation student, being the recipient of this fund would make me incredibly happy, as it means I am one step closer to making my family prouder, especially my mother, who had every intention of going to college but was held back by her family and financial situations in her hometown, as women were considered to only be useful as wives and to bear children. I get the chance to break free from that mold of what a woman should be and make her proud that her own daughter would get to go to college and succeed in what she did not have the ability to do.

6. To what organizations or events have you offered service during high school? What was the most rewarding volunteer experience that you have had, and why?

I have offered service to Pet Haven Adoption Center, the Caldwell School District's event called Book and a Bite, and the music program here at Caldwell High School. But the most rewarding volunteer experience I've had was volunteering at the Pet Haven Adoption Center, where I completed thirty hours of community service in taking care of cats ranging from kittens to senior cats. This meant cleaning their litter boxes, feeding them, and overall giving them love. There are many animals in need of families, and many of these places tend to be understaffed, but with so many animals, it is difficult to socialize them. All having volunteers helps these shelters be able to socialize these cats to hopefully get them some loving homes.

7. How do you plan to fund your post-secondary education? If you have worked during high school describe what you have done.

I plan to fund my postsecondary education by working. I myself have never been allowed to work by my parents because my parents have wanted me to focus on my education rather than stress myself out extra with work. I am also trying to get as many scholarships as possible, whether that's FAFSA or CFEO; I would like to try my best to get what I can. I am also working towards getting my Spanish translator certificate to work as a translator eventually while I study at the same time.
